Tom Marshman, Intro
I am an Arnolfini associate artist. I have been a practising performance artist for over ten years. I have produced over 20 projects in a wide range of medium including performance, photography, installation, publication and film. I actively encourage a dialogue with my audiences and participants aiming to create a safe space to share their thoughts and experiences. The results give very evocative authentic glimpses into everyday things. To date the purpose of my work has been to address issues that are often considered as mundane or commonplace. My work celebrates everyday domestic objects, exploring what is often taken for granted. I place my work in unusual spaces, developing the work in the community that exists there, for example in Keeping his feet on the ground, developed on an allotment plot. I am interested in how memory shifts our view of the world we live in and how these are represented through artistic studies. I employ an approach that is driven by an ideology of the humane. I have a fascination for uncovering extraordinary stories from ordinary lives. I work within a socially engaged process, with an emphasis on cross-generation working across art forms. My practice incorporates visual images and multi-layered signifiers employing video, movement, sound, and text based performance. I have a specific humorous, playful and eccentric, authentic sensibility where I place myself within the frame, allowing me to take responsibly and clear ownership over the content.
